Transport

Among transport services available in Atlanta, the role of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is exceptional in connecting the city with other important places within USA and Abroad. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Atlanta's principal airport, is situated approximately 8 miles south of downtown Atlanta. Hartsfield-Jackson is largely set up as a core airport for Delta Air Lines. The airport has a single groundside terminal, connected to 6 mid-airport concourses by underground walkways and rail transit. Overseas Passengers need to clear migration controls, reclaim hold luggage from a baggage carousel, clear customs, ride the subversive passage to the main terminal and finally exit the airport.

Hartsfield-Jackson airport offers a full range of ground transportation services including, airport shuttle vans, taxicabs, and car rental offices. It is also the terminus of the southern branch of the very economic MARTA rail system and for travelers going to locations in city center, midtown or northern Atlanta. The MARTA stations have taxi stations to aid completion of the journey, and some hotels have free shuttles which will collect from either the airport or nearest MARTA station on telephone request.

Although not very convenient mode of transport, Atlanta's trains and buses reach most parts of the city, but these services are limited outside of the immediate city limits. Atlanta is a car-dominated city, with plenty of parking, particularly at tourist sights. It is easier to use public transport during conventions or big sporting and entertainment events. BATMA operates the buc, a free shuttle service connecting the two MARTA rail stations with many hotels, shopping areas and businesses in the city.

Car rental agencies require an International Driving Permit only if the visitor's national license is not in English, and most prefer drivers to be over 25 years of age. Taxis are available, but it is easier to order one by phone than to find one on the street; they can also be found in taxi stands around the city. Visitors should be cautious of unlicensed taxis, and women traveling alone at night should order taxis by phone.

In Atlanta, the Amtrak station is several miles north of the airport and downtown. However, because much of the city is not reachable by MARTA, a taxi may be required to complete the journey. Amtrak's Crescent train runs daily and serves New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Charlotte, Atlanta, Birmingham and New Orleans. The Amtrak is located at 1688 Peachtree St. N.W.

Greyhound Bus Lines provides bus service to Atlanta from many locations throughout the United States. Buses arrive at and depart from the Greyhound terminal at 232 Forsyth Street, located in the southern edge of the downtown area and directly below MARTA's Garnett Station.
